Fiber Operations Technician

Position Summary: Serves as a primary point of contact for all service-related issues pertaining to fiber service drops and/or home installations.


Position Requirements:

5 years' experience in telecommunications construction, customer premise device installation, network access equipment installation, required.

Experience in network troubleshooting, preferred.

Must display a safe working knowledge of the construction practices required for fiber optic service drop installations on existing electric poles and across developed properties.

Familiarity with fiber optic construction units, and building construction is preferred.

Sound knowledge of RUS construction specifications and the national electrical safety code is preferred.

Must be able to apply practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion, and geometric construction.

Must be able to read manuals and the like and prepare summaries and reports.

Must possess a strong level of competency in the operation of personal computers. Experience with drafting platforms and Microsoft Office preferable.

Must display excellent communication skills and be able to deal with people in a courteous and effective manner in person, by telephone, via email and other electronic communication.

Must be willing to work overtime, holidays, and weekends when needed or in emergency situations, as Singing River Electric is considered by the Department of Homeland Security to be an Essential Service Provider.


Job Overview:

Acts as liaison between customers, contractors, and interdepartmental groups.

Receives information from Fiber Services team to address fiber optic service drop and home installation issues in legacy areas.

Coordinates with Fiber Services team to resolve open service orders in an efficient and timely manner.

Stake and coordinate fiber construction and re-routes to residential and commercial sites, determine assemblies and materials required for work orders.

Creates fiber splicing charts, construction drawings and construction staking sheets for new work orders utilizing manual and computer staking software platforms.

Performs maintenance inspection of network facilities and prepares staking sheets for necessary maintenance work or repairs.

Meet with homeowners, developers, architects, and contractors to determine fiber service construction requirements, as directed.

Prepares legal easement descriptions for proposed utility locations, ready for filing.

Maintains open communications with statewide one-call system for location of underground cables by other utilities and coordinates work as necessary with both internal and external departments/customers.

Inspects completed work for customer satisfaction and material verification.

Responsible for ensuring installations and necessary configurations of outside plant hardware are updated when needed.

Respond to and coordinate correction of damages, safety hazards, and outages when needed.

Promotes safe working habits and use of protective equipment by crew.

Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
